The Ship of Fools Podcast

Very privileged to talk to Philosopher of technology David Skrbina, Ph.D., David was a senior lecturer at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, from 2003 to 2018. His areas of interest include philosophy of mind, eco-philosophy, philosophy of technology, and environmental ethics.
He and Ted Kaczynski published the book Technological Slavery, which elaborates on the Unabomber manifesto and contains about 100 pages of correspondence between the two, which took place over almost a decade. Skrbina talks about Kaczynski’s views on technological society's serious problems, but we go deeper into David’s ideas on potential remedies. We steer clear of the weak sauce technocratic subjects concerning the moralism of such actions and instead go straight for the jugular of technological society. We ask, what practical and spiritual solutions exist within the context of what we know now as a species.
Part of this was an in-depth discussion on the notion of eco-theology, how it differs from traditional religions, and an analysis of panpsychism views in general and how it could impact future humanity less in the grip of technology.
More information on David can be found here, with links to his many fine publications:

The Venerable Paññobhāsa Bhikkhu seriously began considering himself a Buddhist, although a sloppy one, at around 19, on reading the book Zen Flesh, Zen Bones, and began favoring Theravada maybe two years later after reading an old translation of the Sutta Nipata. Around 1988 he began searching for a Buddhist monastery in America in which to be ordained, and after being unimpressed by a Zen place near Mt. Shasta he settled on Taungpulu Kaba-Aye Monastery in Boulder Creek, near Santa Cruz, which was in the Burmese Taungpulu Forest Tradition. He was ordained there in 1991, on the day before the full moon of Visakha (usually May but this time April), the traditional anniversary of the Buddha’s enlightenment.
After two months as a white-robed attendant and almost two years as a monk, deteriorating conditions at the monastery (typical California craziness) inspired some of the senior monks to advise him to go to Burma for a little while till things got better. He planned on maybe two and a half years, but things didn’t get better at TKAM and he wound up living in Burma for altogether over twenty years.
Living in various forest caves (largely to better endure the blazing heat of upper Burma), and mostly avoiding other monks, Paññobhāsa Bhikkhu became pretty much a recluse, spending lots of time meditating. He acquired a reputation for being very strict, and also controversial in his interpretations of Buddhist philosophy. After burning out on Burma and wanting to come back to the USA, his first attempt at living as a free-range monk in America was in 2011.
He has found that living as a monk in America is very different from living as one in a Buddhist country like Burma. After some years of back and forth between America and Asia he wound up where he is now, at a Burmese monastery in French Camp, California.
Paññobhāsa Bhikkhu is a prolific blogger and YouTuber, with a tonne of useful material, elaborating on subjects as diverse as St John of the Cross, Pali textual interpretation, Julius Evola and even the various social ills that assail the West as Present.
Co-hosted this week with “Gods Own Fool”, @Godsfool3

We welcome Mark Stavish, prolific author and director of the Hermetic institute.
Mark was kind enough to join us to discuss the life and work of his friend Joseph Lisiewski, the well known enigmatic Pennsylvanian magician. A character who has fascinated me throughout my life.
We talk about his life through the prism of Alchemy and the dreaded work of the notorious Grimoires, for which he is perhaps most well known.
A link to Mark’s book can be found here:

The Institute for Hermetic Studies is a non-profit organisation offering a range of courses and ongoing support for individuals and groups studying hermeticism, looking to further their knowledge in these matters. The website can be found here:

I can recommend their courses for anyone, and Mark’s books are second to none.

In this week's episode, I express my worldview, the problem as I see it.
I talk the overwhelming psychic masochism inherent in modernity, traditionalist views, neuroscience and a project I'm working on with some tools I intend to provide frogs - to facilitate the return of men of blood, fire and sword. This is not politics, this is not philosophy. this is anti-philosophy, this is anti-intellectual, this is anti-word use. This place will be brain change willed & tangible. I only care for the real world and results.

Dr. Harry Oldmeadow, favourite guest of the show, generously joins us again. This week we speak about my personal favourite book of his “Black Elk, Lakota Visionary: The Oglala Holy Man and Sioux Tradition”
His book deals with the famous Lakota Tribe wičháša wakȟáŋ (“medicine man, holy man) Heȟáka Sápa, famously known as Black Elk.
Harry wrote this book from the perspective of the Perennialist school and much of the analysis derives from this perspective. He drew many of his insights from Fritjof Schuon’s association with Black Elk, adding and interesting dimension.
We talk Harry’s own experience with plains tribes, the great ecstatic Sun Dance, the Great Vision of Black Elk and the ridiculous and snide arrogances of the purveyors of shabby and unmaly wordplay and concept daze “kulture” against the savage and wise Noble Red Man. The Plains Tribes encapsulating much of the spirit respected and desired by many listeners.

Dr. John Powers is a Professor of Asian studies, Buddhism & Religion.
His books deal with Ancient Indian Buddhism, Indian Philosophy - as dealt with "A Bull of a Man" the work we are dealing with today - and several others on Tibetan Buddhism. Links below.
The androgynous, asexual Buddha of contemporary popular imagination stands in stark contrast to the muscular, virile, and sensual figure presented in Indian Buddhist texts. In this groundbreaking study of previously unexplored aspects of the early Buddhist tradition, John Powers skillfully adapts methodological approaches from European and North American historiography to the study of early Buddhist literature, art, and iconography, highlighting aspects of the tradition that have been surprisingly invisible in earlier scholarship.
I loved this chat and his excellent book brought me a great deal of enjoyment:

Jan de Maansnijder is a traditionalist, running a blog of high quality, link below. His works deal with Christian esoteric mysticism and symbolism.
As many of you know Jan textually lays waste to all sorts of absurdities inherent in modernity, such as the accelerated movement from the corporeal to digital weeb sub-corporeal of pure quantity and even some lighter subjects like how neanderthals are merely a psyop created by social darwinists to push the great lie of evolution. Also Jan has created certain allegedly highly effective PUA tips that I won’t repeat here.
We spoke on such matters as Janua Coeli and the Prima Materia and his conception of these ancient symbologies. His blog is extremely insightful, please check out:
